(longer, potentially boring, bio below)
An Irish technology recruiter in Tokyo, helping global companies find bilingual technical talent in the toughest recruitment market in the world. Typically, I work on roles such as software developer, DevOps & infrastructure engineer, UI/UX designer, product manager, project manager, and so on. I meet people from the four corners of the earth and enjoy helping them find their place in this amazing city.
I was once called ‘the least annoying IT recruiter in Tokyo’ by one of my clients. (If you know anything about Tokyo recruiters, that’s quite the compliment!)
Meet the tech team behind the blog!
Bob is a 3-year old dachshund who enjoys naps, chasing things, enjoying a quiet life, and more naps.
Daisy, 2, enjoys running the Roberts’ household, barking at strangers, and making sure Bob is not napping too much.
Manchester born, Kilkenny raised, Japan resident. The gift of a ZX Spectrum in 1983 hooked me on computers and led to a degree in computer science in 1993. Pascal, C, C++, Cobol, Fortran – the good old days.
After college, I joined an Irish software house as a tech support engineer and transferred to London. In London, I spent five years supporting software systems for salespeople and dabbling in business analysis and project management.
A trip to Japan in 1998 inspired me to return in 1999 with the dream of working in Tokyo. I was lucky. At that time, foreign companies were growing their Japan offices and IT recruiters were in demand. I joined an IT staffing & services company and so began my 20+ year career in recruitment.
I’ve helped people from across Japan and all over the world find IT jobs in Tokyo. I’ve worked with everyone from software developers, business analysts and project managers to desktop, infrastructure and network engineers. From data engineers, data scientists and technical architects to product managers, UI/UX designers, and more.
I have been fortunate to recruit for some of the biggest names in technology, banking, insurance, consulting and pharmaceuticals and for small, exciting start-ups.
I work at Smart Partners, a fully-licensed Japanese recruiting agency, focused on quality of service to both candidates and clients. In addition, I consult for emonster, a Seattle-based technology consulting firm, and have recently begun coaching on Carrus.io.
